Santorum personally thanks $1 million super PAC donor
Yesterday, we learned that Annette Simmons, wife to GOP super donor and Dallas-based billionaire Harold Simmons, had given a whopping $1 million contribution to pro-Santorum super PAC Red, White and Blue Fund last month. ABC News’ Elizabeth Hartfield caught up with Simmons to ask her about the donation. Two especially interesting details:
- Annette Simmons says she gave the super PAC another $200,000 this month (which could explain the group’s recent uptick in spending).
- Simmons said Santorum personally visited her after she made the donation, bringing his wife and three children to her Dallas home. “He was very appreciative,” Simmons told ABC.
According to federal law, candidates may not coordinate their spending with super PACs. What about hanging out with the group’s donors? That’s okay. Regardless, this further blurs the line between campaigns and the supposedly independent super PACs that support them.
As we pointed out earlier this year, even if candidates are caught coordinating their efforts with these independent committees, punishment is rare.

Mitt Romney went to the Daytona 500 NASCAR race Sunday for what should have been a chance to show he’s one of the guys. Instead, in casual conversation with an Associated Press reporter at the Florida track, he reminded people once again that he is not exactly a regular Joe.
Asked by the AP reporter if he follows NASCAR, Romney responded, “Not as closely as some of the most ardent fans. But I have some great friends who are NASCAR team owners.”
Democrats and liberals quickly ridiculed the remark on Twitter. “I don’t know people who fish but I know people who own yachts,” tweeted Brad Woodhouse, communications director of the Democratic National Committee. Ari Melber, a writer for the liberal Nation magazine who apparently was watching the Oscars, tweeted: “Do I like movies? Well I have some friends who own movie companies.” […]
The GOP’s Big Investors | NationofChange
Robert Reich writes:
Have you heard of William Dore, Foster Friess, Sheldon Adelson, Harold Simmons, Peter Thiel, or Bruce Kovner? If not, let me introduce them to you. They’re running for the Republican nomination for president. I know, I know. You think Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and Mitt Romney are running. They are – but only because the people listed in the first paragraph have given them huge sums of money to do so. In a sense, Santorum, Gingrich, Paul, and Romney are the fronts. Dore et al. are the real investors.
