Rush Limbaugh today breathed new life into the inflammatory lie that President Obama’s Social Security number is illegitimate. In response to a caller who cast doubt on Obama’s birth certificate, Limbaugh asked, “What are your thoughts on the fact that Obama’s Social Security number is from Connecticut, and he’s never been there?” This is only the latest long-debunked smear conservative talk radio hosts are re-injecting into the mainstream in this election year.
Limbaugh has repeatedly entertained and promoted the notion that Obama is not a U.S. citizen. At the same time, he has also warned his listeners to be wary of birther theories, cautioning them against going down that “dead end street” and claiming he’s “not going to be distracted” by such claims.
Another Republican member of Congress has stepped forward as a birther, calling into question President Obama’s birth certificate at a town hall meeting. Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) told a crowd of her constituents that she is no more convinced of President Obama’s birth place as anyone asking the question:
I don’t know, I haven’t seen it. I’m just at the same place you are on that. You read this, you read that. But I don’t understand why he didn’t show that right away. I mean, if someone asked for my birth certificate, I’d get my baby book and hand it out and say ‘Here it is,’ so I don’t know.
The questioner asked Hartzler if she believed the certificate of live birth that President Obama released last year was a forgery, citing Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s comical news conference from last month as evidence of a conspiracy. To her credit, Rep. Hartzler appeared to dismiss Arpaio’s investigation, saying “I have a lot if doubts about all that.”
But in case there was any question of her birther bona fides, Hartzler doubled down on her skepticism at a press availability after the event:
I have doubts that it is really his real birth certificate, and I think a lot of Americans do, but they claim it is, so we are just going to go with that.
Unbelievable. She looks normal, but then she opens her mouth.

Without saying as much, Arizona officials are working on yet another birther bill. This is the latest of several attempts by the state to try to prove the myth that Obama is not an American citizen. This time, an Arizona legislative committee is pushing a measure that would require presidential candidates to fill out an eligibility form before they can be put on Arizona’s ballot. The state’s Secretary of State Ken Bennett is behind the measure, whose spokesperson said, “There has been a lot of media attention devoted to this, so we wanted to make sure there is a standardized form.” The media devoted to birtherism has mostly arisen because of the endless attempts by Arizona Sherriff Joe Arpaio to prove that the President is not a citizen. Arpaio, who was a strong advocate for Arizona’s “show-us-your-papers” anti-immigration bill, has been planning to try to keep Obama off the 2012 ballot for nearly a year.

To assess the lasting power of the release of Obama’s birth certificate, a January 27-31, 2012 YouGov poll asked 500 respondents whether “Barack Obama was born in the United States of America.” […]
These polls demonstrate that the power of Obama’s action was short lived. Two-thirds of the initial 12-point increase in the percentage of respondents who say that Obama was born in the United States has disappeared since last April.
This trend is again especially pronounced among Republicans – the percentage of respondents who accept the Birther myth is, if anything, even higher than it was before Obama released his long-form certificate.
These results might be troubling, but they are not surprising. They are consistent with my previous work on the lasting power of rumors in the face of new information. As I, and others, have shown, rumors and innuendo are powerful forces in American politics – and they are hard to undo.

Orly Taitz represented one of four plaintiffs challenging President Obama’s eligibility for placement on the Democratic ballot in Georgia. The President and his counsel were subpoenaed to appear in court to defend against these challenges, but the President’s attorney issued a nice letter to the judge stating that the Court had no business or jurisdiction even hearing the case and therefore the defense would not be in attendance.
So Taitz and her fellow attorneys presented their best arguments without challenge from the defense, and requested a summary judgment on the merits.
And the Court’s judgment: the plaintiffs have no case and no credible evidence, and there is no law to support their claims. Judgment for the defendant, represented only by an empty table, on the merits. Or in this case, utter lack thereof.
